We were wandering around Brussels trying to decide among the myriad chocolate shops that surrounded the grand plaza - a veritable chocolate-lover's heaven, when this elegant and old world display in Galaries Royales Saint-Hubert caught my eye. Meert was a standout in a city famed for chocolate. And if you didn't know it, the red velvet ropes in front of the entrance would have signified it as such. There is tea salon in the back, but unfortunately we only had time to purchase some sweet confections to bring back to Amsterdam before flying home.
As the store window indicates, Meert is a veritable institution dating back to 1761 and originally founded in Lille, France.
They are actually famed for their vanilla "waffles" - not your typical Belgian waffles but more like a soft wafer.
They also carry macarons, which of course I had to take home a box of, along with my vanilla "waffles."
My sweet things kept until I flew home and tasted just as good as they looked.
